Eligibility Criteria for SASSA Social Grants
The South African Social Security Agency, also known as SASSA, is responsible for providing social grants to eligible South African individuals who need the most and come under eligibility.
To receive a social grant from SASSA, individuals must meet certain eligibility criteria. In this article, we will discuss the eligibility criteria for SASSA social grants and the types of grants available.
SASSA Social Grant Eligibility
- Age Requirement: Must be between the ages of 18 to 59 years.
- Employment Status: Must be unemployed.
- Income Threshold: Your maximum monthly income should be R624 or less. This is an increase from the previous threshold of R350.
- No Other Social Grants: You can not receive any other social grants from the government.
- Residency Status: Must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or a refugee/asylum seeker with valid documentation.
- Income Flexibility: Applicants can qualify for the grant even if they have an income of more than R350 per month.
- Application Process: No longer required to reapply every 3 months.
- Appeal Process: If an application is unsuccessful, the applicant must submit an appeal for each month they were declined. Appeals are now lodged directly with an appeals tribunal, not with SASSA.
- Recent Changes: These criteria reflect recent changes and are subject to further modifications. Always refer to the official SASSA website or other reliable sources for the most current information.
- Bank Account Requirements: Some grants require applicants to have a bank account or a specific method of receiving payments.
- Verification Process: Applicants might need to undergo a verification process to confirm their eligibility.
- Regular Updates: Eligibility criteria can change, so it’s important to check for the latest updates from official sources.
